CGM Global Summit 2025 – Reflections Through a Banker’s Lens (Series 6/9)
“Innovation and Flexibility in the Energy Transition,” featuring Devrim Celal, Chief Flexibility & Marketing Officer of Kraken Technologies, and moderated by Dr. Sunita Rajakumar, Founder of Climate Governance Malaysia, offered a compelling look at how technology, trust, and design are reshaping the path toward a more sustainable and customer-centric energy future.
1️⃣ The Energy Transition Must Be Human-Centric “Energy transition will not succeed unless the customer is involved.” Technology alone won’t get us there; participation, trust, and good design will.
2️⃣ From Centralized Power to Consumer Power Utilities are shifting from a handful of big plants to millions of mini producers - EVs, batteries, rooftop solar. Kraken’s software enables these devices to interact dynamically, turning consumers into contributors.
3️⃣ Flexibility Is the New Currency of Energy As fossil fuels decline, flexibility moves from supply to demand. Smart software and behavioural incentives balance the grid, seamlessly.
4️⃣ Innovation Through Simplicity “Zero-bill homes” and “fan clubs for wind turbines” make sustainability tangible and personal. When people see real value, adoption follows.
5️⃣ Lessons for Asia & Malaysia Malaysia can leapfrog legacy models; we already have growing EV adoption, hydro strength, and clear climate targets. Now we must digitize networks, empower consumers, and regionalize energy models.
My Reflection
Devrim’s session echoed what we in finance face daily: systems, silos, and the human factor.
Just as Kraken connects devices for real-time flexibility, banks must connect data for real-time sustainability insight. ☑️ Simplify complexity with smarter digital systems. ☑️ Build trust through clarity and inclusion. ☑️ Turn customers into partners in transition, not passive participants.
The “zero-bill home” concept mirrors what green finance should achieve: practical, measurable benefits that make sustainability rewarding.
For Malaysia’s financial sector, the call is clear:
Digitize, democratize, and design ESG products that make it easy for SMEs and consumers to participate in the low-carbon economy. Ultimately, flexibility is the new resilience, in both the power grid and our financial system.
Grateful to Climate Governance Malaysia (CGM) and Dr. Sunita Rajakumar for curating such insightful sessions that bridge technology, trust, and transformation
