Relationship Managers as Drivers of Climate Transition - A Journey : CCPT Is NOT About Punishing Customers
One common misconception about climate risk and Bank Negara Malaysia’s CCPT is that banks will eventually stop supporting customers that are not fully “GREEN”.
In reality, climate transition is rarely immediate.
Many businesses are still operating with: *️⃣ Older machinery *️⃣ Diesel-dependent operations *️⃣ High energy consumption *️⃣ Limited access to transition funding or expertise. And that is exactly why transition support matters.
CCPT recognizes that businesses may be at different stages of their transition journey. The focus is not simply: 🔵 “Is the customer green today?” But rather: 🟢 “Is the customer making credible efforts to transition over time?”
For example: A logistics company may still operate a large diesel fleet today. However, the company may gradually begin to: ✅ Replace older vehicles with fuel-efficient trucks ✅ Pilot hybrid or EV vehicles ✅ Optimize delivery routes to reduce fuel consumption ✅ Install solar panels at warehouses ✅ Improve fleet maintenance to reduce emissions
These may seem like small operational improvements initially. But over time, they can help the business: ✔ Reduce fuel costs ✔ Improve operational efficiency ✔ Strengthen resilience against rising energy costs ✔ Meet future customer and regulatory expectations
This is where Relationship Managers (RMs) can play a powerful role. Instead of approaching CCPT purely from a risk or compliance lens, RMs can help customers: 🔹 Understand transition challenges 🔹 Identify realistic improvement areas 🔹 Explore transition financing opportunities 🔹 Build long-term resilience gradually
Not every customer is green today....BUT many customers can become more resilient, competitive, and sustainable with the right engagement and support. Support from Relationship Managers.
